Why does darkness not comprehend the light?

Why does darkness not comprehend the light?

Because God's spirit is not in them.
The king James version uses old English and the term comprehended in old English meant surround overcome or put out. So what the text saying is that light came into the world but darkness could not put it out.

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬ ‭KJV‬‬

Adding to previous insights, i think the emphasis is that darkness cannot overpower or fully comprehend it, because light outshines ignorance as the ever unfolding infinite intelligence and glory of the Creator.

In the realm of space-time creation however, the duality of light and dark, good and evil have their polarity play and tension. In any case the infinity and transcendence of 'God' always prevails ultimately :)

Why does darkness not comprehend the light?

“And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.”
‭‭John‬ ‭1‬:‭5‬ ‭KJV‬‬
And this is the condemnation,
that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light,
because their deeds were evil.
For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light,
lest his deeds should be reproved.

John 3:19-20

The Light (Truth) is here, but the Darkness (world) will not understand/accept it.
Wouldn't light be symbolic of the Word more than truth, albeit that the LORD is a God of truth?

And the lord commended the unjust steward, because he had done wisely: for the children of this world are in their generation wiser than the children of light. Luke 16:8

I suggest this incomprehension is a natural consequence of become a sinner. Sin changes you and addicts you so much you cannot comprehend righteous things as above ourselves..

How did you see light, and when you found it were you able to comprehend it at first (As Jesus Christ was made wisdom for believers)?

Men loved darkness rather than light.

Even when light, that is Jesus, had come into the world (of the promised messiah in a world expecting him), coming to his own the people of the Jewish nation in his hometown of Nazareth many just downplayed him and he marveled at this cause.

Darkness, was in the beginning.

Genesis 1:1-5

Young's Literal Translation

1 In the beginning of God's preparing the heavens and the earth --
2 the earth hath existed waste and void, and darkness [is] on the face of the deep, and the Spirit of God fluttering on the face of the waters,
3 and God saith, `Let light be;' and light is.
4 And God seeth the light that [it is] good, and God separateth between the light and the darkness,
5 and God calleth to the light `Day,' and to the darkness He hath called `Night;' and there is an evening, and there is a morning -- day one.
