The Righteousness of Christ

The righteousness of God and the righteousness of Christ are the same thing. The scripture says, "For in him (Jesus) dwells all the fulness of the Godhead bodily" Colossians 2:10.

The question is how does this righteousness become ours?

Catholics and other holiness religions like Pentecostalism, believe that the righteousness of Christ is infused into them, and they actually are as righteous as Christ. This is the grounds for their acceptance. They believe that God accepts the righteousness of Christ in them. Not so. The righteousness of Christ is imputed to the Christian, not infused. The word "Impute" means to attribute or charge. The righteousness of Christ is to our account. It is like someone places money in your account, it is there, but you don't have it yet. The reason that we don't actually possess the righteousness of Christ is because we are still here on this sinful planet in our unredeemed Adamic bodies that are prone to sin.

Paul said, "For we know that the whole creation groans and travails in pain together until now. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the first fruits of the Spirit, even we groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our bodies" Romans 8:22, 23.

We are still groaning and travailing in pain, waiting for the redemption of our bodies. When will the redemption of our bodies happen? This will happen when Jesus appears, John said, "But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is" 1 John 3:2. Glorification takes place when Jesus appears, not before. You can dress up your sinful Adamic body in purple and gold and appear to be holy, but you are still corrupt. "For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So, when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory" 1 Corinthians 15:53, 54.

There are two kinds of righteousness. The righteousness of God and the righteousness of man. No one possess the righteousness of God, because all are born after Adam. We all have Adams blood flowing through our veins. Paul said, "Wherefore as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; so that death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned" Romans 5:12. Many believe that our fallen condition can be re-habilitated by works, laws and religion. If that were possible then Jesus lived and died in vain.

It becomes ours the same way that the righteousness of Abraham does - by faith in the promises of God.
