Slightly off-topic from what you're saying, but I've often been amused at how often denominations emphasize as being "vitally important" the quirky doctrines that make them different from other denominations and that, to a neutral observer, seem "not very important." I guess it justifies their existence. Consistent with what you are saying, those quirky doctrines are typically supported by pet verses, often interpreted out of context.
